How I got into #vanlife
Everyone has their own way of getting to their destination. And I don’t just mean a physical place. Everyday we have the option to choose how we want to live our lives. We face different scenarios and opportunities, at every moment, that can change the course of our human experience in an instant. As simple as a decision.
In 2016 I decided to follow a group of hippies out to Oregon and trim weed for the season. Before I made that decision I had a computer science internship making fairly good money. But man oh man was I spinning my wheels. Traffic. Work. Traffic. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. I felt so dead inside but I was making money like I was supposed to right? With a nice stable job in an office.
“Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men. Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!” - The Great Dictator
I told myself “Worse comes to worse it won’t workout and you can return back to Denver.” I packed up my Subaru and one bag of clothes and headed west. I came back to Denver 2 months later but as a changed person. My perspective on how I lived forever shifted. I learned I don’t have to work, pay rent and die. That there are more good people than bad people in our country. That I could live minimally. That this life is mine to shape however I want it to look like. And here I am. Living out of my car, grateful for my tech job at my favorite ski area, and making life work for me - not against me!
I love this quote from the movie The Great Dictator. It speaks so much truth on how America runs its society and to wake up to our unnatural day to days.
“And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men. Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful. To make this life a wonderful adventure. Let us use that power! Let us all unite!“ - The Great Dictator
